Ear, nose and throat (ENT) problems are among the most common reasons people visit a GP in Malaysia. From recurring ear infections in children to chronic sinusitis in adults — these conditions can significantly affect quality of life if left untreated. Here is what you need to know.
Common ENT Conditions We Treat
Ear Infections (Otitis)
Outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) and middle ear infections are very common, especially in children. Symptoms include ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing and fever.
Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuses causing facial pain, blocked nose, thick nasal discharge and headache. Can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting over 12 weeks).
Sore Throat & Tonsillitis
Bacterial tonsillitis requires antibiotic treatment. Viral sore throats are managed with symptom relief. Recurrent tonsillitis may warrant specialist referral.
Allergic Rhinitis
Persistent sneezing, runny or blocked nose triggered by dust mites, pollen or mould. Very common in Kuching due to humidity. Managed with antihistamines and nasal sprays.
Earwax Blockage
Impacted earwax causes muffled hearing, fullness in the ear and sometimes tinnitus. Safely removed at the clinic using microsuction or ear syringing.
Voice & Throat Problems
Hoarseness, chronic cough, throat clearing or globus (sensation of something stuck in throat) may have ENT, acid reflux or other causes — all assessed at our clinic.
When Should You See a Doctor for ENT Problems?
- Ear pain lasting more than 2 days, especially with fever or discharge
- Sudden or gradual hearing loss in one or both ears
- Nosebleeds that are frequent or difficult to stop
- Sore throat with white patches, high fever or difficulty swallowing
- Sinus pain or headache with green / yellow nasal discharge lasting more than 10 days
- Persistent hoarseness or voice change lasting more than 2 weeks
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) that does not go away
ENT Problems in Children — What Parents Should Know
Children are especially prone to ear and throat infections due to their developing immune systems and the anatomy of their Eustachian tubes. Warning signs in children include:
- Pulling or tugging at their ears
- Not responding to sounds or appearing not to hear well
- Repeated throat infections — more than 4–5 per year
- Snoring loudly or appearing to stop breathing briefly during sleep (sleep apnoea)
- Persistent mouth breathing
Early treatment prevents complications such as hearing loss, speech delay and recurrent infections.
